  • Our client's vision for their home is to transform it into a welcoming space where they can comfortably host and share memorable moments with their family and friends. The current 120 square meter residence, although cozy, is limited in space. It lacks entertainment areas, including outdoor spaces, which makes it challenging for the client to fully enjoy their expansive 7-acre property.

Being nature enthusiasts, they spend a significant amount of their time outside, tending to animals, gardening, and immersing themselves in outdoor activities. However, their home doesn't quite reflect their connection to the surrounding nature. Therefore, our challenge was not only to open up the home and create a more spacious, functional interior, but also to update the exterior, blending it harmoniously with the picturesque environment, while still remaining conscious of the client's budgetary constraints.

  • Client's Vision: Living Spaces that Connect to Outdoors

In response to our client's brief, we meticulously considered their vision to create a design that maximizes the potential of their existing home while staying within their budget. Our approach centered on optimising the living areas and enhancing the connection to the outdoors, aligning with our client's desire for a space for the family to gather and a stronger link to their 7-acre property.

Prioritising Living Spaces: A Budget-Conscious Approach

To achieve this, we decided to prioritise the creation of a new addition for living areas while leaving the existing interior spaces largely untouched. This strategic choice allowed us to allocate the budget where it matters most—towards the heart of the home where our clients intend to entertain. The existing, recently renovated kitchen will remain untouched and retain its pivotal position at the center of the new home.

The Focal Point: New West Wing Design

The addition of a new wing to the west of the house became a focal point of our design. This wing includes a living room, rumpus room, family bathroom, and an internal spa. The design focuses on providing beautiful views of the outdoor areas and pool while seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Central Courtyard Design: Outdoor Gathering Hub

The new outdoor area and pool are in the center of our courtyard design, serving as the main gathering spot for family and outdoor activities. To extend the internal living areas to the outdoors and create more space without adding internal area, we designed a wrap-around verandah. The verandah not only enhances the usable living area and provides shading but also serves to harmoniously tie the new addition to the existing house, creating a cohesive and visually appealing whole.

Architectural Integration: Blending Old and New

Inspired by the singular pitched form of the existing house, we incorporated two smaller pitched roofs into the new design. These roofs not only add architectural interest but also blend the new and old structures together, creating a unified look.

Creating Their Dream Space: Reflecting Vision and Lifestyle

Our architectural response focuses on creating a functional and harmonious living space that prioritizes their budget for the living areas and connection to the outdoors. By integrating the old and the new and optimizing the kitchen's location, we transform their home into a place that truly represents their vision and lifestyle.
